Authentic Ethiopian cooking, from doro wat to kitfo and a traditional coffee ceremony, off Waiyaki Way.
Abyssinia is one of Nairobi's standout Ethiopian restaurants, in a quiet spot on Muguga Green off Brookside Grove. The menu celebrates tradition, with slow-cooked stews like doro wat, authentic Gurage-style kitfo, minchet abish and generous combination platters on injera, and the traditional coffee set-up is served even for one. It's calm and welcoming, good for long conversations over a shared platter.
"I’ve been to many Ethiopian restaurants—both here and abroad—I’ve had home made Ethiopian & Eritrean food, and I have to say this is officially one of my favourite experiences! Their Doro Wat is particularly scrumptious and their injeras are really fresh. The spices are refined, not over the top. The portions are generous at such a decent price point. Go while hungry! General ambience is nice, with chill Tezeta & Ethio-Jazz playing in the background. I will definitely be coming again, and again, and again… 😂 አመሰግናለሁ"
"Really nice & quiet to chill and enjoy good food and conversations. Food: Got to try their platter and specifically enjoyed the minchet abish. Never really liked kitfo but this one was palatable. The coffee portion was generous & happy I got to try Ambo too. Service: The waiters were very nice and polite , from serving our food in equal portions, responding quickly to our requests, they even lit a fire for us when it started to rain. Ambience: Neighborhood is pretty quiet and very green. The seats are comfy . There’s no loud music and distractions. Pretty great for catching up with people because you get to focus on them. The toilets outside did flood at some point though, due to the heavy rain. Probably a leaky roof that’s easily fixable."
"Best Ethiopian food hands down!! The kitfo is original gurage so yummy! Service was incredible, friendly and fast service. The restaurant itself is also very nice. Love the coffee set up even for 1 person."
