Fonda's Taqueria, formerly Fonda NBO, has been one of Nairobi's most authentic Mexican kitchens for years, now cooking from a rooftop garden restaurant at Sarit Centre in Westlands. Everything is made from scratch from age-old recipes with locally sourced, organic, farm-fresh ingredients: tacos (the birria tacos are a favourite), enchiladas and traditional dishes like mole and chile en nogada, with drinks to match. The atmosphere is warm and family-friendly, and it also delivers through Bolt, Jumia and Uber Eats and does catering.
"I cannot recommend Fonda's Taqueria enough. This is truly authentic Mexican food. I also can it thank the staff at Fonda's Taqueria enough. They went above and beyond for me. Especially Mercy (who answered my questions). I am from southern California and live on the border of Mexico. I was quite skeptical of Fonda's claims of authentic Mexican food - and without a Mexican chef. I was proven wrong, and I thank Mercy for that. I had no plans to eat there - I had just eaten lunch when I rounded the corner and saw the taqueria - but I walked up and asked Mercy a couple of questions. She politely replied that the Kenyan chef handmade all items from locally sourced ingredients, and they even nixtamalize their own corn to make there masa (look it up - it's quite authentic). I was still a bit skeptical and I asked if I could have a small sample of their salsa. I knew I could determine authenticity from a sample. Mercy brought us a variety of samples and I can say without a doubt that, first of all those chips are the best I have ever had. Thick and crunchy with a perfect texture. I will eat my serrano chilis!! Fonda's Taqueria is as authentic as you can get! I'll be eating here whenever I'm in Nairobi for more than one night. And if you've never eaten there, do try it. Not only was the food great, customer service was great. And I wasn't even a customer - she just wanted me to see how good they are!! Good job, Mercy!! Pro tip: pour some of the salsas over the tacos! I think each salsa will enhance whatever filling you choose! ¡Muy delicioso!"
"Thank you for good Mexican food in NBO. As a Texan and half Mexican, it’s hard to find good Mexican food unless I make it myself. Birria tacos were my favorite. Finding queso fresco, having good guacamole, salsas were flavorful. Enjoyed it greatly. Wish we had a Fonda’s in Diani!"
